SIX MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS TAKE ON THE RECESSION
IN A GAME OF MONOPOLY
As arts and education feel the effects of the current recession,
Tellin’ Tales Theatre is banking on inclusion, community and
fun with its current production, Six Stories Up in the Economy.
Six middle school apprentices and their adult mentors find themselves
in a life-size version of Monopoly, landing on past economic downturns
from the Great Depression to the collapse of the dot.com bubble.
Each roll of the dice reveals new ways to help our country move
forward without landing in jail. This riveting and often hilarious
musical is completely written, performed and produced by adults
and children with and without disabilities.

About the Mentoring Program
Six Stories Up in the Economy is the final product of an annual
mentoring program developed by Tellin' Tales Theatre, now in its
twelfth year. In August, six storytellers were paired with six middle
school students with and without disabilities. Each team was given
the mission to explore a different economic downturn in US history,
from the Great Depression and 1970’s oil crisis to the collapse
of the dot.com bubble. In early September, mentors and their apprentices
came together to link the six vignettes and draft a final script.
All twelve participants will perform Six Stories Up in the Economy
under the direction of Artistic Director, Tekki Lomnicki.
About the Cast and Crew
The cast and production team of Six Stories Up in the Economy is
an exciting mix of ethnicity, ability and age. Mentors include Bill
Drudge, Matthew Kopp, Kris Lenzo, Tekki Lomnicki, Kiel Moses and
Rosemary Postula. Apprentices include Matt Benz, Emily Bergen, Lenny
Brahin, Max Calkins, Olivia Lenzo and Colleen Shelton. Carl Ulaszek
spearheads set design; mask designers, Matthew Wycislak and Justin
Goh are apprenticed by Demetrius Arhontas; and composer, Josh Walker
creates the original score with apprentices Tyler Cochran and Zach
Proce.
About Tellin’ Tales Theatre
Tellin’ Tales Theatre’s mission is to build community
through the art of storytelling. Tekki Lomnicki, Artistic Director,
has led storytelling programs for Gallery 37 and After School Matters
for over a decade. The idea for the initial Six Stories Up came
from her work with these programs, which included students with
and without disabilities. Lomnicki, herself a person with a disability,
took the process a step further to include adult mentors with disabilities.
Six Stories Up in the Economy is a result of this mix, and strives
to remove all barriers between artists, including age, ethnicity,
gender and ability.
Six Stories Up in the Economy is geared toward adults and children
age six and up. The show runs approximately 75 minutes without an
intermission.
